At MMG, we mine for progress.
That means building jobs and livelihoods in host communities, contributing to national development and responsibly supplying the minerals that the world needs.
We are proud to be in mining and have a good progress story to tell. But we don’t get everything right. With ICMM’s help, we’ve made great progress in contributing – safely and sustainably – to society.
We have been a member of the ICMM since MMG was created. Membership of ICMM requires a commitment to the ICMM’s 10 principles. These serve as a best-practice framework for sustainable development in the mining and metals industry.
The 10 Principles are:
- Apply ethical business practices and sound systems of corporate governance and transparency to support sustainable development;
- Integrate sustainable development in corporate strategy and decision-making processes;
- Respect human rights and the interests, cultures, customs and values of employees and communities affected by our activities;
- Implement effective risk-management strategies and systems based on sound science and which account for stakeholder perceptions of risks;
- Pursue continual improvement in health and safety performance with the ultimate goal of zero harm;
- Pursue continual improvement in environmental performance issues, such as water stewardship, energy use and climate;
- Contribute to the conservation of biodiversity and integrated approaches to land-use planning;
- Facilitate and support the knowledge-base and systems for responsible design, use, re-use, recycling and disposal of products containing metals and minerals;
- Pursue continual improvement in social performance and contribute to the social, economic and institutional development of host countries and communities; and
- Proactively engage key stakeholders on sustainable development challenges and opportunities in an open and transparent manner. Effectively report and independently verify progress and performance.
The Principles explain the role of metals and minerals in building a better society. Without minerals – there are no electric vehicles, no solar cells, and no wind turbines. For thousands of years, minerals and metals have been the driver of development. They are our industry’s demonstrable commitment to the importance of good practice in mining. This will help us all build greater trust and establish an industry benchmark of what good mining should be.
MMG is proud of our ICMM membership as it demonstrates to the world that we want to listen, engage and learn. Through our partnership with the ICMM, it demonstrates that we commit – as a mining industry – to improve together.
By committing to the ICMM’s principles we can make a real difference in the places we operate. We know that by living the ICMM principles we are encouraging all mining companies to work together to make a positive global impact.
The ICMM values its network of industry partners, Aidan Davy Chief Operating Officer of ICMM recently said:
“MMG’s commitment to mining with principles is helping ICMM to lift the performance expectations of the industry. Since earning membership of ICMM in 2009, MMG has demonstrated the leadership we expect of our company members in demonstrating a willingness to engage on – and respond to – key international, national, and local sustainable development challenges.”
The ICMM network allows us to grow and learn with each other to ensure that our industry can make a lasting difference in the places where we operate. Only by each company changing its own behaviour can we lift the bar for our industry.
At MMG, we are committed to play our part.
