At MMG, we pride ourselves on thinking long term. During the most recent mining ‘super cycle’ our industry struggled to get qualified people to meet our changing needs.

That is why in 2012, we were proud to donate A$3 million to help establish the Resources Engineering program at Monash University. The initial partnership was a result of the work of Rob Papworth, Group Manager Talent and Recruitment and our former CEO Andrew Michelmore.

MMG is proud to work with Monash University, because we believe that by working closely with universities, we can train and keep the right people in mining.

In 2014, MMG and Monash launched the ‘MMG Scholarship’ and Georgia Clayfield was the first recipient. Georgia is now working with us as a Mining Engineer Graduate at our new site Dugald River. You can hear more about Georgia in this short clip:

Amanda Huang from Rosebery and Brett Cosgriff were also awarded the scholarships in 2015 and 2016.

In April 2018, Monash and MMG announced a five-year extension to MMG’s support of the University’s Resources Engineering program. The A$170,000 commitment over five years is an extension of MMG’s A$3 million donation from 2013-2017.

The agreement is part of MMG’s commitment to growing a steady pipeline of talented resources engineering students in Australia. The new funding will be used to provide scholarships to promising students, fund site visits to remote resource projects and support increased participation in The Australian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (AusIMM) activities.

MMG will also continue to provide vacation work opportunities to students on the program.

At the signing of the agreement, Monash University’s Dean of Engineering Professor Elizabeth Croft thanked MMG representatives for their ongoing support.

“MMG has been a generous and long-standing supporter of mining and resources engineering education in Australia. We are grateful to MMG for this new funding to support student scholarships, as well as the initial A$3 million of funding to support the establishment of our Resources Engineering program.”

As MMG looks to fulfill its growth objectives, and as our industry continues to grow, resources engineering graduates from Monash will well positioned to enjoy a challenging and fulfilling career.
