The mining industry has a long history, built on hard labour, perseverance and being male dominated. Positive steps have been taken in recent years to equip women with technical and operational skills. For good reason too. Diverse teams are known to be more innovative, mindful of different safety approaches, and as some companies claim, even more profitable.

Holly Roughley, a truck driver at MMG’s Rosebery mine, is making inroads for a more inclusive workforce. But what stands out is her determination to battle against the odds to get ahead in her career and boost her skill set. Holly’s efforts have been formally recognised. Holly was recently named as a joint winner of the ‘Exceptional Young Woman’ in Tasmania Resources Award, sponsored by Caterpillar Australia.

As well as changing the face of mining, Holly’s drive to succeed extends to work, family responsibilities and community service. At the age of just 21 years Holly raised her six-year-old cousin while working hard to buy her first home. This work ethic has paid off with the purchase of a second property.

Holly, who hails from a fourth-generation mining family, is a valued member of the Rosebery Mine Rescue Team and a health and safety representative.
