Las Bambas commissions private LTE network to provide over 95% coverage at operation

As part of the work being undertaken to become a digital mine, Las Bambas has launched a private LTE (Long-Term Evolution4G) network that provides communication coverage of over 95% throughout the operation, with the possibility of connecting various instruments and industrial equipment to the networkThrough this initiative, Las Bambas has become the first mining company in Peru to implement a private LTE network. This outcome could not have been accomplished without benefiting from diversity and being inclusive. Staff and specialised contractors, located in both Australia and Peru, worked together as one global team over time to succeed.

The installation of the private LTE network has increased the capacity to transmit data and improve coverage, allowing sensors and devices that were previously isolated and required physical presence to take readings to be connected securely and automatically. This has meant that sensors and equipment are able to be located throughout the operation and data can be measured in real time. Further, this innovation will also allow Las Bambas the possibility of implementing other advances in technology in the future, such as augmented reality, digital twinsIndustrial internet of things (IIoT) and increased mobility, among others.

It is important to note that this private LTE network has no connection to the Peruvian public LTE network, so the information transmitted will always be kept within Las Bambas systems, ensuring its security.

As part of this technological effort, Las Bambas is now working to connect its heavy equipment fleet to the private LTE network through joint effort between the Technology and Electrical Maintenance departments and various specialised contractors.

Over the coming months Las Bambas will be working on the integration of its geotechnical field equipment system into the private LTE network, as well as the different electrical sub stations owned by the operation.
