In the remote Andean communities neighbouring the Las Bambas operation, subsistence farming has been the primary occupation for many local residents.
One of the ways that Las Bambas ‘mines for progress’ is by focusing on agriculture through its social development programs – with the aim of making a significant improvement to quality of life.
In 2016 Las Bambas donated cattle vaccines to the Carpaiva Farmers and Cattle Breeders Association. This was achieved through a $US6,000 social investment agreement to improve the health of 1,200 head of cattle. Having stronger, healthier and more productive cattle will result in improved incomes for the cattle breeders.
This initiative will promote, encourage and strengthen ties with the institutions and farming communities located alongside the road Las Bambas uses for transporting copper concentrate.
The president of the Carpaiva Farmers and Cattle Breeders Association, Santiago Alca Huamán said: “We are grateful to Las Bambas because it is honouring its commitments to the farmers and cattle breeders.”
