MMG supplies the material that are critical in achieving a more sustainable world. We recognise the importance and live with the impacts of human-induced climate change in our environment, economy and communities each day. And we are committed to being part of the global solution by taking appropriate actions that will reduce our direct and indirect emissions as well as continuing to be an international supplier of some of the critical minerals to help build a more sustainable world.
In March 2022, the MMG Board approved our first climate resilience strategy.
As part of this strategy we have committed to a goal of net zero carbon emissions by 2050. To help us get there, have now set an interim target of reducing operational greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions (Scope 1 and Scope 2) by 40%, from a 2020 baseline. This interim target aligns with science-based methodologies to help reduce global warming to 1.5°C, as per ambitions of the Paris Agreement and recent IPCC recommendations. We will also work with our supply chain to help drive emission reductions in our value chain (Scope 3) by firstly doing the research to understand and report this impact by the end of 2023, followed by target setting and working with our supply chain partners on emissions reduction opportunities.
To assist us in delivering on our interim target, the following items form key components of our climate strategy:
Our internal targets are informed by the Climate Change Position Statement and principles from the International Council on Mining and Metals, to learn more about their position statement click here.
MMG is committed to being part of a global solution by responsibly supplying the materials that are critical to building decarbonisation technologies and in enhancing the resilience of our host communities and countries in the transition to a net zero economy.
