The planet is getting hotter and hotter, due to the increasing use of fossil fuels, industry emissions and deforestation. During 2020, several activities were carried out within MMG Kinsevere via the Department of Environment. One awareness-raising initiative focused on the importance of trees. That led to a plantation being located on the site and in some villages around the mine.

The General Manager Weiquan Xia and all Department Heads took advantage of the 5th of December National DRC day to promote the vital role that trees play in mitigating climate risks. Employees were encouraged to plant and distribute trees as part of a rehabilitation program with surrounding communities.

COVID-19 restrictions limited initial reforestation planting to 50,000 seedlings. The tree planting was launched with Kinsevere school students. During the wet season, 12,000 tree saplings were distributed and planted with local communities. Other initiatives included:

• Protecting rare plants
• Printing T-shirts for the tree planting ceremony
• Holding a symbolic tree planting gesture with General Managers, Department Heads and other company representatives
• Launching the reforestation campaign around the mine and in the community in collaboration with MMG’s Social Department
• Raising the awareness of the environmental importance of trees during morning meetings
• Distributing trees to relevant state institutions (Territorial Administrator, Head of Group, Head of Sector, Ministry of Environment and NGOs
• Environment Service staff participated in provincial and community activities
