Tasmanian mine rescue competition

The 33rd Tasmanian Minerals Emergency Response Committee (TMERC) Mine Rescue Competition was recently held at Cornwall Coal, on Tasmania’s east coast. The following MMG Rosebery team members took part: James Sucic, Ashley Lamble, Marcus Cook, Holly Roughley, Luke Smith, Matthew Spilsbury, Tessa Simpson and Terry Quinn.

The competition is a chance for teams to put their knowledge, skills and teamwork to the test through real life scenarios including first aid, firefighting, rope rescue, team skills, theory, search and rescue. Teams are also judged on the best captain, safety award and overall winner.

Six Tasmania-wide teams participated including MMG Rosebery, Henty Gold, Grange Resources, Bell Bay Aluminium, Cornwall Coal and TMERC, which comprises different sites. This year it included individuals from Grange, Bell Bay and MMG, testing mutual aid capabilities. Team members have no prior training and met each other for the first time with the following results:

  • 3rd Underground Search & Rescue
  • 3rd Overall Safety
  • 3rd Best Captain

  • 2nd Fire Fighting
  • 2nd Search & Rescue
  • 2nd First Aid
