MMG is committed to respecting the rights and interests of Indigenous people and traditional land owners and our approach to engagement respects the cultures, languages, values and customs of these communities.
For the last 8 years, our Las Bambas operation in the Apurimac region of Peru has been supporting cultural identity and preservation through the ‘Encuentro de Danzas y Qhaswas Carnavalescas y el Encuentro Inter Provincial e Inter Regional de Danzas T’ikapallana’ (Carnival Dance and Singing Meeting and inter-provincial and inter-regional dance meeting T’ikapallana). The event, established by Las Bambas in 2010, seeks to bring together communities to celebrate their local traditions, including dancing and singing, in an inclusive and educational way.
The event has been classified as a national cultural heritage event by the Peruvian government, bringing together communities from the 6 districts of Cotabambas province: Haquira, Mara, Challhuahuacho, Tambobamba, Cotabambas and Coyllurqui. Other nearby regions and provinces can send their own delegations to participate in the event as visitors.
MMG is committed to supporting the preservation of the unique culture of the high Andes in Peru, and working with our local communities to recognise and commemorate important cultural events in the region.
